Project Overview

As part of the £55.7 million power and heating system upgrades for RAF Mount Pleasant complex (MPc) on the Falkland Islands, Alternative Heat Ltd (AH) were appointed to fabricate 8No. containerised plantrooms, to serve as decentralised heat stations and pump stations within the site wide DHS.

The nature and location of the site provided many constraints on the design and build process, with all modules required to withstand a 8,064 mile, 3-week journey to site on a container ship, and withstand the harsh Falkland weather with minimal maintenance for a 25+ year lifespan.

In order to conform with shipping requirements all plantrooms were built as skid mount solutions which could be inserted within standard shipping containers, with innovative layout facilitating a safe and fast build route, alongside provision for ongoing simplified operation with key plant service and replacement access via sliding tables.

Site location and layout required extreme weather resistance and for each unit to be decentralised. For this AH created fully weather sealed, self-contained, plug & play plant and pump rooms which required minimal on-site integration utilising low maintenance components whilst ensuring compliance with MOD specification.
