Project Overview

The Lakeside Wing at Cardiff University Hospital was designed as a temporary surge facility to ensure sufficient capacity across the Health Board’s sites during the second wave of COVID-19 cases.

The U-shaped, modular structure made possible with a £33m investment from the Welsh Government. The project is believed to signify the fastest ever delivery of a large building (under 10,000sqm) for clinical or education use across the UK, and considering its ratio of size to speed, is Darwin Group’s most efficient delivery ever. The facility will accommodate up to 400 hospital beds. This, coupled with the additional 200 beds across CAVUHB’s sites, allows the Welsh Health Board to meet the Winter and Covid-19 capacity requirements as predicted by the Welsh Government and local intelligence data and modelling.
