Project Overview

The new Kintore Midmill Primary School will be the first major timber constructed school building in Scotland. The timber will provide an aesthetic backdrop to the learning environment. The design and construction process has meant that the structure of the building can be expressed and will use a combination of glulam portal frames and a new cross laminated (CLT) timber sports hall.

The £12million project has been the vision of Aberdeenshire Council to create an exciting, ground breaking learning space for the new intake of pupils and to provide much needed primary school places for the growing village of Kintore. The site chosen for the school is part of a larger mixed industrial and housing development being undertaken by a consortium of three house builders. However before its start the project had to overcome the substantial difficulties due to initial land acquisition issues which have delayed the completion date.

The project is a new build 100m x 100m U shaped school building, comprising a split level glulam framed design taking into account the flow, movement and usage of the spaces. The two wings to the building consist of a single storey accommodation comprising classrooms and circulation space. The main section houses a sports hall, dining hall, staff areas and double storey spaces. The central section of the building is the new school assembly area. Due to uneven site levels the ground floor of the double height section is a storey below the wings. To access the two sections there is a new feature CLT staircase. The scope of work includes artwork and interior design themed to reflect the local culture. External works comprise a grass football pitch, artificial all weather pitch, roads, parking and playground spaces with landscape planting.
