Project Overview

In February 2021, modular construction specialist, Darwin Group, completed the new Lakeside Wing at University Hospital Wales (UHW) in Cardiff. The wing accommodates up to 400 beds, 50 of which are fully HTM compliant, and is part of the £33 million investment from Welsh Government for the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board (CAVUHB). The temporary surge facility was constructed to ensure there is sufficient capacity for patients with COVID-19. Following a tender exercise, Darwin Group were successful and were appointed on 10th September 2020. At this stage the project was at RIBA stage 2, and Darwin’s scope of works required a full turnkey service from designing all aspects of the building including MEP and specialist installations, clearing the site, breaking ground, carrying out all works including landscaping. Darwin Group do not believe that a new build project of this size in the Healthcare sector has ever been achieved. From Contract Award to full completion was a time period of 141 working days for a building that in 9,883m2 in size. The project gained an energy rating of A+ and has received high praise from CAVUHB throughout.
