Project Overview

A new-build care home - owned by Orkney Islands Council - opened in January 2020, to accommodate up to 40 people.

The home is designed to mimic a cluster of single-storey houses and meets the University of Stirling's 'Designing for Dementia' standards. The building, extending to 2,900 sq.m., is open in design, giving residents freedom to move around easily and in safety. Large windows reveal stunning views over the bay towards Stromness.

Scotframe was invited to tender for supply of the timber frame structure by main contractor Orkney Builders (Construction) Ltd.

Scotframe brought its considerable technical expertise to bear to devise an ingenious solution in the specification and design of the care home's timber frame roof structure and ensuing thermal properties, overcoming significant challenges along the way.

Scotframe reviewed the original architectural plans for the construction of the roof and proposed a faster, more energy-efficient solution - utilising Scotframe's Val-U-Therm PLUSĀ® roof panel system.

Scotframe's design resulted in significant improvements to the buildability of the care home and shaved over five months from the original build programme.
