Sector - Commercial
Company - SIPS UK
Technology - SIPS

Project Overview

SIPS UK are innovators in Structural Insulated Panel Technology. Nearly 30 years ago we were involved in the manufacture of the first Structural Insulated Panels in the UK, designed specifically for the building industry. Then 13 years ago, we erected what we believe to have been the first SIP residence in the country.

SIPS UK are at the forefront of offsite manufactured, fast track building systems. We employ modern methods of construction & manufacture all our SIP systems in-house. With our vast experience and industry knowledge,we provide a 'one-stop shop facility' allowing us to tailor bespoke build packages to meet the most demanding client requirements.

We were approached by Gary Johns Architects and Synergy Property Group, who had been appointed as Architect and Main Contractor by the client, Ion Science. Through initial meetings and discussions both Architect and Main Contractor believed that SIPS would provide the best structural solution for the new Ion Science UK head office, research centre and manufacturing plant - however the client was more sceptical.

The speed and quality of build combined with the enhanced in-use performance provided a compelling case. After a period of consultation, the project team at Ion Science was convinced and SIPS UK were appointed as the structural frame provider to build a new state-of-the-art facility to house the company's expanding operation all in one complex radiating out from the central manufacturing facility.

Ion Science has over 25 years' experience in designing, manufacturing and supplying gas sensors and gas detection instruments for a wide range of industries and applications. In addition to the base in the UK, the company has offices in Germany, Italy & the USA, along with a global network of distributors. As research is at the very heart of the company, the new dedicated R&D department is fundamental to product development and in turn the success of the operation.

With the company's scientific focus, the design of the new facility is somewhat surprising. The inspiration for the building design was taken from an old agricultural building that was originally on the site. From the barrel shaped, roof with an apex, clad in corrugated zinc to the Western Red Cedar shiplap boarding - this new state-of-the- art complex, resembles a series of agricultural buildings designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape - concealing the ground-breaking work taking place within.

SIPS UK manufactured 2,500 m2 specifically design Structural Insulated Panels for the project at a cost £400,020 - by far the company's largest project to date.
