Project Overview
Lynch Hill Enterprise Academy occupies a 2.6 hectare site on the outskirts of Slough, Berkshire. It is undoubtedly an exemplar of offsite construction.
A three-storey secondary school comprised of teaching, sporting, extra-curricular and community facilities, the Academy boasts a central Enterprise Exchange which underlines its focus on Business and Enterprise, as inspired by the world-leading Harvard Business School.
Internally the school features myriad learning areas together with sporting and performance spaces, spanning a total of 8750sqm of high-quality accommodation.
Externally, Lynch Hill features strong orthogonal lines and an intelligent palette of materials including timber composite rainscreen panelling with glazing and render. Meanwhile, a contrasting upper storey in charcoal creates visual interest and reduces the building's overall massing, whilst a section of curtain walling at its imposing yet welcoming main entrance is complemented with attractive hard and soft landscaping.
The project's early delivery was achieved despite a three-month delay in demolition due to the presence of another school at the site. On this live site, McAvoy's expert team got to work on the school's traditional portal frame core, all the while conducting constant checks with the firm's state-of-the-art production site to ensure perfect synchronicity with its modular wraparound.
With initial works including the demolishing of one school McAvoy also faced the significant challenge of permitting safe access to a neighbouring football pitch under construction by Slough County Council.
Despite these obstacles McAvoy took all the the stress, uncertainty and concerns about delivery and quality control off the client, applying its pioneering and proven Think Smart. Build Smart methods to fulfil the Trust's bold vision.
McAvoy's field-leading Building Information Modelling (BIM) expertise, used to review the design plans for clash detection purposes, ensured synchronicity and a perfect fit between all Fixtures, Fittings and Equipment (FFE) and the internal structure. This allowed for meticulous planning to ensure whole-life cost budget control and comprehensive collaboration among all stakeholders.
