Project Overview
106 Lewes Road challenges the preconceptions many people hold about prefabricated architecture. The building is curved in plan and sculptural in form, yet is constructed with a series of carefully designed prefabricated elements delivered to site for installation. The scheme is located in Brighton and provides much needed student accommodation for the University, with a total of 48 individual student suites and generous communal facilities.
Adopting a hybrid approach, the structure is designed to be as lean and efficient as possible. A 4.5m high concrete transfer deck allows for an open plan communal lounge and enough space for a refuse vehicle to drive underneath. The upper floors, which house the student suites, are constructed with a combination of cross laminated and closed timber panels, delivered to site with windows and a vapour barrier pre-installed to form a weather tight interior. A double height communal roof terrace will feature climbers growing up cables from the surrounding brick clad pergola.
High quality, solid detailing has been achieved by adopting prefabricated brick panel technology for the cladding while internally, the student apartments are fitted out with bespoke prefabricated furniture and bathroom pods.
