Project Overview

The entry is for the detailed design, manufacture, supply & installation of the Glulam and CLT roof structure plus supporting steel columns for The Heart Building in Welwyn Garden City for Tesco Stores Ltd.

It's an innovative office, wellbeing, collaboration and quality assessment centre whose design was undertaken by Architects LOM in close collaboration with Engineers Fairhurst's all the way from competition up to tender, with Wiehag GmbH then working with the design team on the final construction design and production detailing of the Glulam, CLT & steel column package.

The complex roof of the building is a bi-directionally curved, exposed glulam timber structure, which spans column free over the internal superstructure, and its curved surface has been compared to the body of a fish, which gives some idea of the challenge involved in forming this roof using flat CLT slabs & double curved Glulam members.

The design of the roof is further complicated by external support being provided by racking columns which don't tie back at first floor level. For such a complicated structure Wiehag's Engineers used Parametric design which linked to our CNC machinery and enabled our skilled erectors to successfully install this amazing roof.
